We won two awards at the 2009 KCHD Design Excellence Awards.  A Gold Award in the Outdoor Category and a Silver in the Historical Renovation Category both for our Drummond Home Renovation.

KC Home Design | Design Excellence Awards 2009

Studiobuild designed and built 52 Awards for KC Home Design’s 2009 Design Excellence Awards.  The design consist of a custom concrete base with a solid Walnut cap, the color and lettering are custom vinyl.   The custom concrete mix and fabrication was completed by Professor John Kevern and a few of his students  in the Civil Engineering Materials Group at UMKC.   A special concrete mixture was designed that achieves over 4000 psi in 4 hours and will have an ultimate strength above 20,000 psi.  Two special Ed Tanner Awards were constructed for the top Residential Firm and top Commercial Firm.  Those awards were constructed using recycled solid Mahogany and a 100% crushed glass aggregate with a blend of slag and fly ash. Since there is no cement, the slag was heat activated to achieve the desired strength.

I got one award put together to photograph for the upcoming issue of Kansas City Home Design. I can’t show all sides since it shows one of the winners so these photos will have to do for now. Photo’s by Bob Greenspan Photography.

Kansas City Home Design | Design Excellence Awards

Concretebases
Studiobuild has been hired to build a series of 54 awards for Kansas City Home Design magazine’s Design Excellence Awards. Initially the project was viewed as an easy simple project, however we failed to realize the complexities involved integrating the text involved with an award with a form that can be replicated that many times. Studiobuild also entered a few projects so there is a chance we may be building awards for ourself, nothing like a little pressure. The awards are constructed of a concrete base (it helps having a concrete guru available to help) with a solid walnut cap. The pic is from the first run of pouring the bases.
