Last week we officially turned the corner at Dwelling 3918. Four dumpster, one dump truck, and a few trailer loads later we have the house fully gutted, some trees trimmed and have officially started putting the house back together. The back wall we were all so worried about came down a little too easy, so we are now tuckpointing the entire house. So far the project has gone as planned, we didn’t plan on saving anything and I don’t think we are going to be able to. Several things were thrown together throughout the years and we are ripping everything out and doing it back right. The time clock is ticking quickly and we are moving as fast as we can.

After a lot of sweat and a few smashed toes the two chimneys at Dwelling 3918 have been eradicated. The stone and mortar was in much worse shape than we had imagined, the jackhammer was not used as much as planned we pretty much lifted the stones off one by one. Several of them were completely fractured and fell apart. This week we do some structural bracing and prepare the house for the removal of the back wall. Tension is building amongst all of us curious how its going to go, is it going to fall apart like the chimney or is it going to require constant hammering for a few weeks. At this point your guess is as good as ours, I’m just looking foward to the challenge. Wish us luck.

We finally have cleared the hurdles surrounding Dwelling 3918. After months of back and forth with the bank D & K finally got the house, we quickly wrapped up drawings met with the city and began work. The building permit was issued last week and our project deadline is December 15 according to the bank. The project is being funded by an FHA sponsored home construction loan known as a 203-k, the program is great and allows people to work on homes that would be tough to get financing for traditionally. Unfortunately you have to play by the banks rules throughout the process and it is becoming clear that the bank does not have much of a clue when it comes to construction. We started working on design drawings for the project in March and had to submit a full construction estimate and drawings in May in order for the loan to process. Here we are a few months later and it looks like we may finally get paid.

Everyone involved is super excited to get the project rolling. The house was built in 1887 and was a very traditional and plain home. Our task is to completely gut the entire house, rip down the rear stone stone wall, and give it a thorough modern kick in the pants. We’ve joked all along that we are probably going to seriously offend some old school Hyde Park fans in the process, and we are okay with that.

If you get a chance please check out the homeowners blog documenting the process from their perspective. Dwelling3918.

We recently were awarded two KC Magazine Design Excellence Awards. We were honored with a bronze award in the Specialty Room Category for the WDB Walnut Slat Bar. Our Custom Office Furniture for SBMAC took home top honors in the Craftsmanship Category. We were featured in KC Magazine’s July issue in a story featuring local craftsman. The July Issue is also the Design Excellence Awards Issue so we have several photographs of our work throughout the magazine ( the issue is available online click here ).

We want to extend thanks to all of our great clients. We would not be able to produce award winning work if it wasn’t for you. Allowing us the freedom to produce our designs and push the envelope on a daily basis is priceless.

Due to large cutting board demand Studiobuild has a newly formed Etsy Shop. Last week we finished up another batch of 30 cutting boards. Demand is high so I imagine these will sell out in a hurry. Most people requested larger cutting boards this time around so we had to bump the pricing up a bit to compensate.

We also had an intern for the week. Logan hails from Florida and is interested in architecture, he visited all week with hopes of learning a thing or two about the profession. A week later he learned that we aren’t really architects, we build more things than we draw, and that cutting boards require a lot more work than you would think.

Our cutting board sales have gone berzerk. Our first batch of cutting boards for Mothers day sold quickly to family and friends. Then they got picked up on the kitchen, and now Lifehacker picked it up. Our email has been swamped with request ever since. Unfortunately we are currently sold out, we do have some in process that should be finished up next week. I think we are setting up an etsy store to handle our scrap to cash proceeds and help ease the ordering process.

If you would like to get added to our email list for when the next batch of cutting boards gets finished. Please email me at jerad.studiobld ( at ) gmail.com.

Studiobuild recently built a series of cutting boards for Mothers Day Gifts. Our initial run was successful and we sold all 25 in a matter of hours to family and friends. Today Apartment Therapy’s sister site The Kitchen picked up our work and the remaining boards are selling like crazy. Our cutting boards are made from the scrap wood our furniture shop produces. Species vary considerable and 90% of the wood is locally harvested hardwoods. Some exotic woods make it into the pile and ultimately end up in a cutting board or two but its mostly as an accent. Our cutting boards are individually unique since we make them using the scrap we have at the time. Our cutting boards range in price from $20 – $50 ( and up for custom large boards ) plus shipping. We do offer bulk discounts if you want to purchase them to give as gifts.

Here is a picture of the boards still available.

Some shots of the boards we made last week. Sorry folks these have sold.
